Ingredients

Black Bean Patties
  • 2 cans black beans 15 oz each, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 red onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Sweet Heat Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Method

  1. Make the sauce: whisk together mayo, sriracha, honey, and vinegar. Refrigerate until needed.
  2. Mash black beans in a large bowl, leaving some chunks for texture. Mix in breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, and spices.
  3. Divide mixture into 4 equal balls. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat with a thin coat of oil.
  4. Place a bean ball in the pan and immediately smash flat with a spatula. Cook 3–4 minutes until a dark crust forms.
  5. Flip carefully and cook 2–3 more minutes. Add cheese if desired in the last minute.
  6. Serve on toasted buns with sweet heat sauce, lettuce, tomato, and pickles.

Notes

Refrigerate the bean mixture for 30 minutes before cooking for patties that hold together better.
