Movie night does not need a theater. It needs a couch, a blanket, and a bowl big enough that everyone can reach in at the same time without bumping elbows.
\n\n\n\nWe started making this when we realized we were spending fifteen dollars every Friday on movie theater snacks. This cheddar popcorn costs about a dollar and tastes better. The kids do not know the difference — honestly, they prefer it because they get to shake the bowl, which they find unreasonably exciting.
\n\n\n\nThe secret is adding the cheese powder while the popcorn is still hot and buttery. It sticks to every surface and turns plain popcorn into something that disappears in about twelve minutes flat.
Cheddar Popcorn Mix
Ingredients
Method
- Pop the popcorn using an air popper, stovetop method, or microwave. If using stovetop: heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large pot over medium-high heat, add kernels, cover, and shake occasionally until popping slows.
- Transfer hot popcorn to a very large bowl. Remove any unpopped kernels.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the popcorn and toss well. The butter helps the cheese powder stick.
- Sprinkle the cheddar powder, garlic powder, and onion powder over the popcorn. Toss and shake the bowl vigorously to coat evenly.
- Taste and add salt as needed. Serve immediately in a big bowl meant for sharing.
