Let’s be real — summer break sounds magical in theory… but after about three days of “I’m bored!” and “Can I watch TV?”, most of us are scrambling for ways to keep the kids busy without draining our wallets (or our sanity).
I put together this list of totally free, fun, and easy summer activities to help fellow parents survive the season — while actually enjoying some of it, too.
These are tried-and-true ideas my own kids love, and I hope they help your family make this summer a little more joyful, a lot more active, and way less stressful.
1. Library Summer Reading Programs
Our local library has become our summer lifesaver. Not only is it cool and quiet (blessed AC), but most public libraries offer awesome free summer reading programs with prizes, activities, and family events.
Fairfax County parents — you can check out their program here. It runs June 11 to August 17 and often includes prize raffles, STEM kits, and even special events.
💡 Tip: Look up “Summer Reading Program + [Your County]” to see what’s happening near you.
2. Nature Scavenger Hunts (Free Printable)
This is one of our favorite low-prep, high-reward ideas. Whether it’s the backyard or a local trail, kids love looking for bugs, pinecones, birds, and weird-shaped leaves.

Make it a race, bring a magnifying glass, or let them take photos like little explorers.
3. 💦 Free Splash Pads & Fountains
When the heat gets real, nothing beats water play — and splash pads are the ultimate free summer hack.
Some of our favorite Northern Virginia spots include:
- Fairfax City Splash Pad – in Old Town Square with benches and plenty of shade.
- Virginia Highlands Park – lots of water features plus a huge playground.
- Drew Park (Arlington) – great for toddlers with fun spray hoops.
- Cheesie’s Playground (Alexandria) – my kids beg for this one! It has both a water feature and a really unique playground layout that keeps them busy for hours.
💧Want to find splash pads in your area? Search your town’s parks and rec site or try keywords like “splash pad near me.”
4. 🧺 Park Picnics & Playground Hopping
We love picking a new playground every Friday and packing PB&Js or hummus wraps to-go. It turns a basic afternoon into an adventure.
And if you’re local, we’ve got a growing Instagram highlight of the best playgrounds in Northern Virginia — feel free to check it out and share your favorites too!
5. 🎨 Craft Days with Recycled Materials
Empty toilet paper rolls? Instant rocket ships. Cardboard boxes? Welcome to Castle Cheeseburger. Set up a “junk bin” with recyclables and let your kids surprise you.
Crafting this way is cheap, creative, and great for all ages.
6. 👣 Neighborhood Nature Walks
Grab a notebook or your phone and go explore your own block with fresh eyes. We do mini photo challenges like “find something fuzzy” or “spot a bug.” It’s fun, gets them moving, and sparks curiosity about the little things.
7. 🏛️ Free Museum Days (Bank of America Perk)
If you’re a Bank of America cardholder, you can get free admission to over 225 museums nationwide on the first full weekend of each month.
Even without the card, many museums host monthly free days — just search: “free museum day + your city.”
8. 🎲 Host a Family Game Swap
Have your kids outgrown a puzzle or board game? Organize a swap with friends or neighbors. Everyone brings 2–3 games and trades — it’s like shopping, without spending a dime.
9. 🎶 Free Outdoor Events & Community Fun
Local concerts, outdoor movies, block parties — summer is full of free events if you know where to look. Try:
- Your library’s event calendar
- Facebook parenting groups
- Parks and Rec websites
We make a “Summer Bucket List” and try to hit at least one new event each week.
10. 🏃🏾♂️ Kids vs. Parents Obstacle Course
Let your kids design the challenge — then race them through it. Ours usually includes pool noodles, sidewalk chalk mazes, and a water balloon finish line. They LOVE seeing us get soaked.
